[David Corn] No Good Veep Choices for McCain?: Earlier in the day, I had pondered the conventional-wisdom short-list of McCain's choices: Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty, Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal, former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney, former Bush budget director Rob Portman, and former Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge. At least three of these contenders should be nowhere near McCain's calculations:
[The Monkey Cage] Why McCain Might Win: As you might expect, the correlation between the two questions for all likely voters is moderately strong at 0.51 (though its only 0.26 among swing voters): respondents who see McCain as independent of Bush are more likely to say that McCain would do a better than Obama of handling the economy than are respondents who expect that McCain would mainly continue the policies of President Bush.
[Dizney Words] Obama, McCain Seek Demographic Force Like Soccer Moms (Update1): McCain, an Arizona senator and former prisoner-of-war, led first-term Illinois Senator Obama by large margins when the women were asked which candidate had the right experience to be president and which would best protect the U.S. from terrorism.

Maybe this was Bush’s plan all along against illegal immigration - just run the economy down and wait for them to leave?

[The Washington Independent - US news and politics - washingtonindependent.com] McCain Stumbles on Domestic Issues: On Wednesday, when McCain began his town hall in the refurbished theater in the bucolic downtown of Wilkes-Barre, it seemed like he might finally have realized that he could run the table on the domestic agenda with Obama abroad. He spoke of the great economic challenges and gas prices, about the need for charter schools and, sigh, the need for wind and solar and tide power, along with offshore drilling.

[Philadelphia Independent Media Center - Passionate and Accurate Tellings of Truth] Alexander Dismisses Economic Plans of Obama and McCain: and as President Bush attempts to hold together the U.S. economy during his final six months in office, it is likely it will become the responsibility of the next president to offer a national plan that will move the nation forward and to restore the confidence of the American people.

[Independent Voters for John mccain] Majority of economists see McCain better for stocks: poll: On a scale of 1 to 5, with 1 being “very good”, 12 economists gave McCain’s proposals higher marks, while nine rated the two candidates equally and eight preferred Obama’s policies, according to the poll released on Wednesday.

[The Seminal :: Independent Media and Politics] McCain's Utter Cluelessness on the Economy: Frank Rich has a scorching op-ed in the New York Times today that lays bare McCain's utter incoherence on the economy. McCain has switched his views on the Bush tax cuts (used to oppose, now supports), how Americans have fared under .
[Reidblog [The Reid Report blog]] Last stop; Downing Street: After emerging from the aircraft - which has his catchphrase "Change we can believe in" printed on its side - a relaxed Mr Obama met the American ambassador, Robert Tuttle, and his wife, Maria, before greeting the waiting press. The presidential candidate and his entourage were then driven to their West End hotel, the Hyatt Regency London near Marble Arch, in a convoy of black Mercedes people carriers.
[Allen L Roland's Radio Weblog] JOHN McJOKER IS NO LAUGHING MATTER: Fiorina, the ubiquitous new public face of McCain economic policy, adds nothing to the mix beyond her incessant display of corporate jargon, from trend lines to start-ups. Before she was fired at Hewlett-Packard, its stock had declined 50 percent during her five-plus years in charge. She missed earning projections ~ by 23 percent in one quarter ~ much as she now misrepresents both the Obama and McCain records.
[The G Spot] McSexist (part the second of my "John McCain is a wingnut" series): McCain, of course, did not support the Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, which would have restored the standard interpretation of the Civil Rights Act that had held sway prior to the Court's Ledbetter decision. If that in itself was not clueless enough for you, here's what McCain when asked about the pay discrimination issue: "They need the education and training, particularly since more and morewomen are heads of their households, as much or more than anybody else. And it's hard for them to leave their families when they don't havesomebody to take care of them."

[SWJ Blog] 25 July SWJ News, Op-Ed, Blogs and Events Roundup: With Europeans clearly favouring Mr Obama over his Republican rival John McCain, the reality back in America is that their presidential race is close, with many voters still harbouring significant doubts about the Democrat's lack of experience and core values. Although it is early days in the general election campaign, and with Mr Obama still favoured to win, the polls show that since he captured his party's nomination a month ago, Mr McCain has actually gained ground on his opponent.

He argues that he is "the only candidate in this race to propose a genuine middle-class tax cut," and claims the nation needs as president a leader who "doesn't defend lobbyists as part of the system, but sees them as part of the problem."

[Ido's Blog] Give Credit Where Credit is Not Due: Sorry Senator McCain I don’t think the fact that President Bush has lifted the executive order banning drilling offshore on the continental shelf has had anywhere near that much effect on the price of oil — not so long as the Congressional ban on offshore drilling remains in place.
