[The Big Picture] The App business looks like the personal computer of the ’80’s or the internet of the second half of the ’90’s. At some point I have to believe it’s success will cause it to break out from single company usage and reach for ubiquity

[THE BEAT] THE BEAT » Blog Archive » The Beat's Annual Year-End Survey, 2010 ...: What was the biggest story in comics in 2009?  It has to be that I finally won an Inkpot at the San Diego Comic-Con —- since we have been used to being ignored by the comic book world in the United States ever since we started trying to expand the market with our 25 year world tour for literacy, the arts and creativity using COMICS in 1985.  Cartoonists Across America & The World has painted more than 1800 murals and done more than 87 books in the last 24 years and in our 25th and final years, we feel that perhaps more people in our industry are finally recognizing that for there to be a future for comic books in the USA, we actually need legions of new readers under the age of 10.  But I have been saying that for the last 40 years!  Change always comes slow to the American publishing industry, they seem to take their cues from the United States Congress in how “quickly”

[The Linux Mint Blog] The Linux Mint Blog » Blog Archive » Mint 8 review: Raiden's Realm: I was delighted to read that Clem wrote (in response to Samuel’s dislike of the installer): “We’re happy with Ubiquity (it is, after all, among the best installers in the Linux world) and we don’t have plans to replace it.” As someone who has tried, and continues to try, a great variety of distros - and as someone who places a very high value on the greatest ease of installing multi-boot systems - I would have to say that the Ubuntu family, using Ubiquity, has always made multi-boot partitioning easy for newbies. The importance of this can’t be overestimated, since a big part of my job as a FOSS disciple and proselytizer is demonstrating to fearful newbs how easy (and versatile) it is to install and try it in a variety of situations and configurations - including, most especially, with other operating systems.

[FreshPatents.com: Data processing: financial, business practice, management, or cost/price determination - USPTO Class 705 Patent Applications Update] Us savings bond gift system and method to redeem a gift card for a ...: [0015] Accordingly, several objects and advantages of my invention are providing a gift system and method to allow donors to efficiently give US savings bonds as a gift to recipients by purchasing a combination gift-card and point-of-sale activated (POSA) stored value card at retail locations such as retail stores or United States Post Office locations which can subsequently be redeemed by the recipient though an internet redemption process using the recipient's social security number and a unique number associated with the stored value card. The gift of the combination gift-card and POSA stored-value card can be given by the donor to the intended recipient who then follows the instruction printed on the greeting card to exchange the POSA stored value card for a US savings bond by filling out appropriate web-forms including the provision of the recipient's Social Security number, which the system then transmits electronically to the US Treasury or to a federal reserve bank as required by the Treasury department for the proper issuing of the US savings bond to the recipient.

Put simply, the computer was too complicated for any one corporation to actually develop independently -not even for multi-national behemoths like IBM that once prided itself on being able to do everything.

But unlike most navigation systems, Google Maps Navigation was built from the ground up to take advantage of your phone’s Internet connection.

[DrunkenData.com] DrunkenData.com » Blog Archive » The Perfect Storm: The Economy ...: The only upside is that the increasing commoditization of hardware in the distributed computing world, and the ubiquity of high speed public networks, have given ICT planners quite a bit more flexibility in terms of their integration options - and usually at a substantially reduced price point when compared to their 1980s hardware/networking options.

[VMblog.com - Virtualization Technology News and Information for Everyone] VMware Predictions for 2010 - What's Next for All of us? : VMblog ...: Even more significant, several companies emerged this year delivering complete bundles of server, storage and networking gear that are pre-packaged and completely optimized for virtualization, easing customer adoption and integration. As these bundles continue to be rolled out next year, I expect them to quickly become the common building blocks of newer data centers, making today's IT infrastructures more affordable, modular, and flexible, something that our customers can never get enough of.

[a2f2a] a2f2a » Blog Archive » Fan relationships make a value pipeline: Despite the phenomenon of Myspace (which is almost exclusively the domain of bands these days it seems) , the Internet itself has not and most likely will not solve the problems plaguing the music industry.  In her FMC panel discussion, publicist Ariel Hyatt delivered some sobering statistics demonstrating some issues with the glut of music available. Out of 5 million bands on MySpace last year, 105,575 released albums.

[P2P Foundation] P2P Foundation » Blog Archive » On Defining a Post-Industrial ...: (this is why, today, we commonly see a ubiquity of just a few brands and models of cars and trucks in the developing world -typically the few most rugged and cheap of Japanese made vehicles like the Toyota pickup trucks) To address this problem, Howarth came up with the notion of developing a new low-cost automobile specifically adapted to the situation of developing nations. A car that could handle the rough conditions of unpaved roads, was simple enough in design that it could be largely made locally even in these poor countries, and which was very simple to repair even with crude tools because it would be made mostly of wood.

[The OSK Project] The OSK Project » Blog Archive » Moore's law at work in Nigeria: Columbia University economist Jeffrey Sachs said, “The cell phone is the single most transformative technology for world economic development.” This is a bold statement but one I am loathe to argue or disagree with. In fact, I will now provide evidence of ways microprocessors contained in cell phones have allowed Moore’s Law open up new markets in underdeveloped countries and how cell phones have indeed transformed the economic development trajectory of one specific developing country, Nigeria.

[P2P Foundation] P2P Foundation » Blog Archive » The return of the Age of Water: Fire is a fitting metaphor for such a system, for it involves a one-way conversion of matter from one form to another, liberating energy-heat and light-in the process. Just as our economy is burning through all forms of stored cultural and natural wealth to liberate energy in the form of money, so also does our industry burn up stored fossil fuels to liberate the energy that powers our technology.
