[John Stossel] After reading all the stories of doom and gloom regarding the economy, taxes and the environment, I have yet to see what us mere mortals, who are riding this roller coaster without a stop button, can do. Do I put my money in my mattress?

Immediate, decisive and swift action is required, along with frugal, day-to-day management of expenses and our business is required.

[Bob Cesca's Awesome Blog! Go!] Bob Cesca's Awesome Blog! Go!: Dow 10000 Matters: The DOW, as we know, is an easily manipulated indicator of nothing. It is simply a measurement of public corporate profits which will go up when a company shuts down it's US operation and moves to China or moves its factory to Guam and uses forced Chinese laborers to work for grossly substandard wages in an attempt to stick a "Made in USA" label on it.

[Dr. Housing Bubble Blog] Saving Money is for Economic Girlie Men: 5 Reasons Why The United ...: It is estimated that nearly 70% of our economy is fueled by consumption.  That is, buying cars, homes, boats, computers, televisions, furniture, movie tickets, and all those other great consumerist items.  And much of that consumption was fueled by debt.  Many Americans during the bubble pulled out equity from their homes to upgrade the kitchen to something Emeirl would envy even if they rarely had the time to cook.  Many also used the money to fund extravagant vacations and purchased numerous technological gadgets.

Who Knew... at SocketSiteâ™: If he were just a bit older, he might have adult memories of the same doom and gloom scenarios around here and the rest of California post-80s boom. Then, it was the aerospace (massive down South, pretty big around San Jose) industry that was losing jobs.

[Freakonomics] Yes, We're in a Depression - Freakonomics Blog - NYTimes.com: I think this book sounds definitely like a “Doom and gloom” downer, but I’m not sure it would serve as a good contrarian indicator. I think the general population, including the financial industry, appears to be of the opinion that this downturn, large as it may be, is merely a temporary disaster and that we’ll bounce right back to the roaring 2000’s in a year or so.

[RECESSION.ORG] Eight 2009 Economic Predictions | RECESSION.ORG: I'm optimistic about the choices that President-elect Obama has made for his economic team, and I've got some suggestions for what they should do. Hopefully the new Treasury Secretary, Tim Geithner, will incentivize lenders to restructure mortgages by guaranteeing half of the reduced principal amount and sharing among the government, homeowners, and lenders any subsequent appreciation.

[The Digerati Life] Financial Crisis In The Media: Is The Economic Crisis Overhyped?: I wonder now whether I’m miscalculating the severity of our financial situation, as implied by these bailout talks and Fed’s threats of recession. In the midst of all the ruckus and rumblings of economic carnage, here I am still conducting myself in the same way I’ve always been, except now, I’m wondering how much more worried I should be.

[The Housing Bubble Blog] The Housing Bubble Blog » Bits Bucket For August 27, 2009: Yep, this whole situation seems like it was taken straight from the movie “Startup.com” - a great movie that takes place in the dot com boom days about a company that was going to make untold fortunes. It wa an interesting movie that was filmed in real time”¦ so you got to see the company go from thinking they were going to rule the world to going to the end of the unemployment line.

[Dr. Housing Bubble Blog] Real Homes of Genius: It Takes a Pink Home to Lose 80 Percent in ...: The stinking unemployment rate in California is 11.2 percent!   Have you taken a look at Detroit home prices?  There is a reason why some homes are priced at very low levels.  Unemployment does not help in boosting prices.  And this is one key point I want to drive home to all the bottom dwellers.  Until you stabilize the employment situation, you can focus all you want on mortgages and cheap credit but what use is that when people are struggling to find employment?  You’re going to make your mortgage payment with a $300 weekly unemployment check?  I’ve seen various sources talking about job growth during the housing bubble decade here in California and estimates from 40 to 50 percent of all job growth can be attributed to housing, finance, and industries tied to the real estate market.  With that said, it is important to look at places like Compton since it is good to have an idea of what we have been purchasing through bailouts of the banks and Wall Street.  I think I answered my question as to why banks aren’t dolling the homes up.  With all these bailouts given to any bank, why fix a home when the government is gearing up to buy them as is?

He seriously suggested: “Put money into something incredibly safe, like a high-quality hedge fund.”
