[Wheels] Taylor and his wife, Helen, had completed a 48-state drive averaging 67.9 miles a gallon: 9,505 miles in 19 days, filling up only 13 times and spending a total of $371.03 for diesel fuel. That beat the Guinness record of 58.8 miles a gallon they set a year ago on nearly the same route in an almost identical 2009 Jetta TDI.

[GreenCarReports.com] 2009 Volkswagen Jetta TDI: 36-39 MPG in Real-World Use ...: Diesel fans have long complained that today's clean diesels, including the Jetta, get much higher-than-EPA mileage figures in real-world use.EPA's 40 mpg: On targetBut this makes two reports showing that, at least for highway travel, the EPA's mileage figure for the Jetta TDI is pretty much on the money.That said, in the Ward's test, the 2010 Prius (EPA rated at 51 mpg city / 48 mpg highway) still trounced the 2009 Jetta TDI, returning 48.3 miles per gallon on the Interstate (vs the TDI's 39.5 mpg) and a jaw-dropping 60.1 mpg on slightly slower rural roads (against the Jetta's 44.0 mpg).Any vehicle that returns 35 mpg or more in real use is more fuel-efficient than the vast majority of new cars today.And after a point, the differences are more about bragging rights than about saving usefully significant amounts of fuel. Because MPG is not a linear scale, the actual gasoline saved over 100 miles by going from 40 to 60 mpg is less than 1 gallon.Driving impressionsAuthor Healey liked the Jetta TDI's "torquey diesel, the exemplary fuel-economy numbers, and the large rear trunk," while his friend and travel companion John lauded the reclining passenger seat.They were less thrilled about the hard seats, excessive tire noise at speed, and out-of-date electronics.

When gas prices there were double what we paid in the United States during the 1990s, European officials created tax breaks to encourage diesel ownership, and technological improvements essentially eliminated the pollution and performance issues with the fuel.

[Consumer Reports Cars Blog] Tested: Speed vs fuel economy: Consumer Reports Cars Blog: The Honda Insight hybrid showed the largest drop in fuel economy”over 15 mpg going from 55 to 75 mph. The Toyota Camry returned 40.3 mpg at 55 mph, but that reduces to almost 35 mpg when the speed moves up to 65 mph and drops to almost 30 mpg when speeds reach 75 mph.
[The Driving Woman] 2009 VW Jetta TDI: Open Thread | Long-Term Road Tests Blog on ...: Having driven both there is no comparison...the Jetta is a great drive and the Prius is a transport pod (riding the subway is more vehicular excitement)...I'm still in disbelief that anyone could buy a Prius, Insight, et al over a Jetta TDI...The value of the Jetta is excellent as well...My son is just awaiting the arrival of the Golf TDI in a couple months and will be prepping his 2006 Rabbit 2.5 for trade...
[Autoblog Green] Popular Mechanics gives Jetta TDI Automotive Excellence Award ...: blahblahblah, when you buy a gallon of diesel its the same volume as a gallon of gasoline, otherwise why would it be called a gallon. I'm sure in PM's article they addressed the city issue, and for people who live in cities and dont drive long distances, prius makes sense, otherwise, look at an alternative and see how it stacks up for you
[The Driving Woman] 2009 Volkswagen Jetta TDI: 700-miles per tank | Long-Term Road ...: Her daily commute is roughly 30 miles and she wanted to get a vehicle with better fuel economy (her previous SUV got around 13 mpg). So it gets half the mileage of the VW TDI, but holds 3 times as many people.
[KickingTires] Daily-Driver Challenge: Hybrids, Diesels...and a Smart ForTwo ...: Neither of our diesels ” the A3 TDI and Jetta TDI ” could match the hybrids low-fuel costs, though our calculated fuel-cost difference between the third-best Fusion Hybrid and either diesel was less than $200 annually. The A3 impressed us with plenty of low-end diesel acceleration, a well-appointed cabin and the groups most refined ride quality;
[The CarGurus Blog] Is diesel really worth it? | The CarGurus Blog: Well, apart of fuel economy and car longevity, let’s not forget that TDI means a turbo-compressor that will significantly increase the torque produced without threatening the longevity of an engine, because diesels are built naturally sturdy. Another positive points is that the direct injection reduces noise and the amount pollutants in addition to increasing efficiency and driving pleasure.

The fuel efficiency of a car is the ratio of useful work produced to the fuel energy consumed, in the same way that your furnace's efficiency is the ratio of heat produced to the fuel energy consumed.
