[socializing finance] As Anderson points out, however, “Just because products are free doesnt mean that someone, somewhere, isnt making huge gobs of money”. For example, the act of using a “service creates something of value, either improving the service itself or creating information that can be useful somewhere else.

[beyondvc] The "free" business model: So in concept I agree with the notion that the world is getting cheaper by the second, but on the other hand don't forget Chris' points that free only means that dollars do eventually have to come from somewhere to pay the bills. Oh yeah, one other point-as we move to this world of free, there will be lots of carnage and the road will be littered with many dead companies, as only a small percentage in a growing pie will be able to make this model work and viably consume your time and attention to deliver the money.
[...hush...] On staying relevant in a "Free" economy: This week's Advertising Age features an interesting interview with Chris Anderson, who is probably best known for his work with Wired, but is also known for his book The Long Tail: Why the Future of Business is Selling Less of More.
[Library Revolution] FREE! FREE! FREE!: I can’t wait to pick up FREE, Chris Anderson’s forthcoming follow up to The Long Tail. This may be one of the biggest issues libraries will need to deal with as we struggle to define ourselves in the economy emerging around us.

[KK Lifestream] Technology Wants To Be Free: . Plotted over time, the graph of its price drifts toward the free (in the chart below the real price is pink). While it will keep heading toward zero, the curve follows a mathematical pattern. Assuming the functions remain the same the price will never reach its limit of the absolutely free. Instead it steadily creeps closer and closer to the limit, in an infinite series of narrowing gaps. This pattern of paralleling the limit but never crossing it is called approaching the asymptote. The price here is not zero, but effectively zero. In the vernacular it is known as “too cheap to meter” -- too close to zero to even keep track of.
[olyecology weblog] 301 - Earth's Tree News: 7) On Thursday, a handful of people set up a new Bear Mountain Tree Sit in the mature Garry Oaks at Spencer Road and Highway 1, right next to the Shell station. More folks have been stopping the machines from working this week as well.

[perichorus] The Space where Dreams are Born: I think it also relevant to mention here however, that if the modern Church is to recover its symbolic consciousness with the biblical story of redemption, as typologically told in Scripture through the imagery of the Exodus event, then we need to recover our identity as one people of God within God’s election of Israel. A vast segment within modern Evangelicalism has tended to believe that God has two different peoples and “callings” or “elections.” First is the calling of Israel, and then the calling of the Church. The calling of Israel is often wholly identified with the political nation of Israel, as a direct expression of God’s election of Israel. Roman Catholic teachings and mainline oriented or liberal Christians have tended however, to believe that the Church has displaced Israel, as the “new Israel.
[Mekhong Kurt's Weblog] “The Rounds” from February 15, 2008: The various bars are doing anywhere from okay to pretty good. The ones that seem to be the busiest are Silver Dollar, Hare and Hound, Cheers, and New Square One Pub. Sure, all the bars, including those, have dead times; that’s normal anytime of year. Of course, I don’t know the numbers, so my impressions based on seeing people may have little correlation with how much money the places are bringing in, but I do know some of the regulars are pretty generous in their spending, at least when I’ve seen or been with them.
[olyecology weblog] 291 - Earth's Tree News: Note that the Nuhalk are not involved and the big question is "has this deal reached for over the 65% of the whole GBR being off limits to resource extraction and hydro plants and roads." Way back in the beginning of the negotiations Valhalla, (Colleen McCrory) got all 9 environmental groups to sign an agreement that if the big four enviros (this included RAN) were to go on and further negotiate on the GBR the minimum area they would agree to sign off on would be a minimum of 65% in order to preserve ecological integrity in the GBR.
