[Politics on the Rocks] The too-bright stage lights shimmer upon the polished surface of a grand piano behind Sonya Schumann as she stands at a podium in the recital room of the University of South Carolina’s music school.  The senior music major and accomplished concert pianist faces the audience before her with a confidence born of long years on stage but her role in tonight’s performance is an unusual one.  Between full-time studies and part-time jobs, Schumann has spent the better part of the last semester organizing and planning for tonight’s charity concert.  The concert inaugurates a new program at the University, one that is the first of its kind and an unfortunate sign of the times as academic institutions nationwide face budget shortfalls and cutbacks, a “Music Student Emergency Fund.”

[Cultures of Health] Cultures of Health | Semi-Live Blogging from the EAHMH Conference ...: Anyway, having worked as a volunteer officer of an association not unlike this one, having been involved in conference organizing, I cannot find anything that is not positive to say about this gathering in Heidelberg, that has been organized so sincerely, and generated so many superb papers and discussions and connections and new thoughts. It was, in its own particularly and ritually structured way, a great conversation and I leave enriched and rewarded with a new repertoire of understanding and acquaintance in the practice of medical history.

[Sandow] Two things I've written - Sandow: Not every new music concert I go to under mainstream auspices could attract this audience, but sometimes iIll go to one -- my perpetual example is the eighth blackbird show at Zankel with premieres by Steve Reich and Bang on a Can -- and my gut reaction (not an intellectual position, but sheerly from my gut) is that it's a shame to see this familiar in-group audience, even if it's a few hundred people, when I know for absolute sure that this music could, if things were done right, draw maybe a thousand new people, who'd react with cheers of joy.

I get most enjoyment from listening to a poet talk about the written work and the work in progress: why a poem was written, the spark that ignited the vision, the snatch of overheard conversation, the incident that retrieves a past memory, the choice of words and imagery, the simple scene transformed, the need to be a witness.
