The Early Word: Talking up the Economy - The Caucus Blog - NYTimes.com

[The Caucus] Midterm Madness: Former President Bill Clinton is wading into the Colorado Senate Democratic primary, throwing his clout behind Andrew Romanoff, the former state House speaker, over Senator Michael Bennett, who has the support of President Obama and the Democratic establishment.

Obama and the Economy: Is Hope All He's Got?

[Politics Daily] , most of the leaders there "generally sided with cutting spending and raising taxes, despite warnings from U.S. President Barack Obama and others that too much austerity too quickly could choke off the global recovery." Obama had pushed for economic growth through stimulation (read: government spending), but other leaders, such as German Chancellor Angela Merkel, called for spending cuts and tax increases to deal with deficits. (With the Greek crisis threatening economies in Europe -- and beyond -- this emphasis on budget-balancing is understandable, whether wise or not.) The meeting ended with a watered-down agreement, no vigorous plan for global economic recovery.

Problems For POTUS On Economy - Real Clear Politics - TIME.com

[Real Clear Politics - TIME.com] Harris Interactive polling has generally produced better results than other online endeavors such as Zogby Interactive, but I'd still caution you to handle with care.  Nevertheless, these results are in line with other results that we've seen: The President's approval ratings are tepid, but underneath those approval numbers, the results are much more ominous for Democrats.

The Washington Monthly

[Political Animal] The 58 Democrats who are ready to pass this legislation should at least, as a group, convene on the steps of the Capitol and read out the names and states of each of the Republicans (and de facto Republican, Ben Nelson), along with the estimated number of their constituents in their states who will lose benefits and jobs because their Republican representatives are trying to kill this legislation.

Stabenow: Republicans in 'Cynical Game' to Crater Economy by ...

[The Washington Independent] Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.), whose state has the second-highest unemployment rate in the country, just held a conference call with reporters, in which she expressed her belief that Republicans have cynically joined together to stop the jobs bill, also known as the tax extenders package or H.R. 4213, to keep the unemployment situation bad, or possibly make it worse, for their own electoral gains in the fall.

[FiveThirtyEight: Politics Done Right] In any case, I agree with Cohen that, even if people are more concerned about the economy than about deficits, they may very well be skeptical about deficit financing as a remedy to economic ills. As noted above, I thought Montgomery's "mixed signals" comment was completely reasonable.

Federal Reserve Faces a Dilemma Over Weak Economy - DailyFinance

[DailyFinance] When the Federal Open Market Committee releases its assessment of the economy after a two-day meeting on Wednesday, most economists will be looking for hints about when interest rates may start to move higher. But the Fed may have another, more serious problem: what to do about deflation -- downwardly spiraling prices -- when rates can't go any lower.

UK Economy | British Government

[GlobalPost] Osborne and his boss, Prime Minister David Cameron, knew this austerity would be a tough sell and like farmers preparing a long fallow-field for new planting, they and their Liberal Democrat partners in Britain's coalition of the Con-Dem'd, have spent much of the six weeks since they came into office telling the people of the United Kingdom that things were going to hurt.

[Dprogram.net] If the IMF or the European Central Bank come to the people of a collapsing European nation and tell them to sacrifice their pensions and their savings and their very standard of living all for a debt that their government has fraudulently racked up in their name, no one would go for it, and rightly so.

Matthew Yglesias » The No-Stimulus Economy

[Matthew Yglesias] Maybe that chart ought to be leading us to a much more prosaic deduction: We tossed a whole crapload of stimulus money out there, and it didn’t do very much–it didn’t even act as a way for government to self-perpetuate itself, to say nothing of doing much in the way of improving the private economy. Let’s give it up as a bad job and wait for the economy to fix itself, as it always does.

It sounds like something you would hear from a small-business owner who’d just been turned down for a loan —
