[Grasping Reality with Both Hands: Brad DeLong's Semi-Daily Journal] RGE - Malpass on the US trade deficit...: Tis the season to be compassionate. And I guess that also applies to those who are allowed to grace the Wall Street Journal’s oped page....
Exchange Rate Clubs and the Monetary Approach
[Economist's View] There is a longcomment by Ronald McKinnon on the link between exchange rates and international adjustment at Martin Wolf's blog at the Financial Times. This is a shortened version, just a part of the section at the end -- there's quite a bit more at the (open) link given above:

Competition for American Producers from High-Cost First-World Labor
[Grasping Reality with Both Hands: Brad DeLong's Semi-Daily Journal] the oddity was that Toyota and/or the Toyoda family owned most of the parts suppliers, so what was the point of shoving the inventory overhead back out of the plant and down the road? My thought was, and is, that the thing that mattered was the simple paying of attention to everything that this sort of "formal" inventory asceticism forces on everyone in the joint.

That we are here, is frightening!
[Mover Mike -] The U.S. Mint makes all coinage for this country and the Bureau of Engraving and Printing prints Federal Reserve Notes, U.S. passports, Treasury securities and other security documents. With these two institutions under the direct operational control of the Federal Reserve Board, the Federal Reserve has even greater control over the entire U.S. monetary system.

Is there a law that requires Americans to pay direct unapportioned tax?
[at-Largely by Larisa Alexandrovna] Aaron Russo tried to get an answer by making this documentary and it is chilling. So I called around and asked various tax attorneys if they could please cite the law, because I really still thought it was possible there may be one.

Ben Bernanke Says the Obvious
[Grasping Reality with Every Limb: Brad DeLong's Semi-Daily Journal] Why couldn't it be that the Chinese leadership wants the nation they control to create and produce the goods and services of the 21st century? Perhaps they believe this is where true power lies in the community of nations and have adopted a type of mercantilist strategy to accomplish their goals.

[Brad DeLong] It, and what it carries, can be transported in a month anywhere in the world where there are suitable harbors, railways, locomotives, flatcars, truck tractors, diesel fuel, and roads. It is the modern cargo container, and it is able to move non-fragile, non-perishable goods from any modern factory with a loading dock to any modern warehouse anywhere in the world for about 1% of retail value.

Kerry on “Kudlow & Company” Last Night
[The Democratic Daily ] KERRY: …to start with, and I think a lot of smart people, like Warren Buffett and others have said to me, you know, `I didn’t ask for that reduction, I don’t need that reduction, and, in fact, I’d be much happier if our economy were working more effectively and we could lower the cost of health care, provide greater incentives for growth in other sectors, and I’ll make a lot more money.’ So says Warren Buffet.

The GOP's Affection for Protection
[Economist's View] Ever since the Democrats took control of congress, there has been an attempt to drive a wedge between the populist and free-trade factions within the party.
