The Battle For Ground Zero, Part 183

http://lawhawk.blogspot.com [A Blog For All] Many are still wondering how and why remains are being found at Ground Zero and why the politicians like Bloomberg aren't willing to stop development at the site in order to conduct a more thorough search for remains even though the site has largely been vacant for the past five years. One problem with this argument is that the remains were discovered in the course of preparing for the new Freedom Tower.

Felix Salmon on Argentina and Agricultural Commodity Prices

[Brad DeLong's Semi-Daily Journal] If the wheat price is good news for Argentina, the corn price is bad news for Mexico, where the beleaguered central bank is desperately trying to keep a lid on inflation despite a country where everybody seems to live on tortillas and salsa -- or, to put it in commodity terms, corn and tomatoes, both of which are surging in price.

"Twin Deficits, Twenty Years Later"

[Economist's View] This edition of Current Issues contributes to the debate on the twin-deficit hypothesis by analyzing the link between fiscal and current account deficits across a larger sample of countries and over a longer period than examined in earlier studies. Reviewing the international record over the past thirty years, we revisit both key components of the twin-deficit hypothesis: the relationship between fiscal policy and private saving, and the response of current account balances to fiscal policy changes.

Global Imbalances in Historical Perspective

[Brad DeLong's Semi-Daily Journal] Abstract: Great attention is now being paid to global imbalances, the growing U.S. current account deficit financed by growing surpluses in the rest of the world. How can the issue be understood in a more historical perspective?

Globalization and Fair Trade: Stiglitz on Doha

[Globalclashes] Joseph Stiglitz argues in an article that the failure of the Doha Round shows that the United States pays only lip service to free trade and that reviving those trade negotiations is in its interests. Money quote: America and other advanced countries are the real losers from the demise of the Doha Round.

Transatlantic Free-Trade Zone as "NATO for the World Economy"

http://atlanticreview.org [Atlantic Review - Analysis of U.S. foreign policy and transatlantic relations] The role NATO played in an age of military threat could be played by a trans-Atlantic free-trade zone in today's age of economic confrontation. The two economic zones -- the European Union and the United States (perhaps with the addition of Canada) -- could stem the dwindling of Western market power by joining forces.

Blood Diamond - New movie coming soon

[ James5] Big diamond companies like De Beers are getting nervous, they claim only 1% of diamonds are implicated in conflict but it’s not clear how true the numbers are, still I’m not buying diamond for my wedding ring - hopefully I’ll get Aussie gold too. Also, Di Caprio’s accent should be interesting to watch.

Can WTO Trade Sanctions Save the Planet?

[Economist's View] There is a precedent for such duties, Stiglitz said, because Washington previously obtained a World Trade Organization ruling in support of a U.S. ban on the import of shrimp caught in Thailand using nets that killed endangered species of turtles. "I asked one of the (WTO) appellate judges (involved in the decision) whether he understood what the implications were for global warming, because clearly if you can impose a trade sanction to save a turtle, you can impose a trade sanction to save the planet,"
