Vroom

[Economist's View] Free-Trade Ain't What It Used to Be, by Dean Baker: USA Today had a greatstory about President Bush's visit to a Harley-Davidson factor in York, Pennsylvania to tout the merits of "free-trade." The reason why the story was so great is that the plant is in fact a testament to the effective use of protectionist policies to sustain a favored industry.

Build It, and They Will Stay Home

[Economist's View] But doing all we can to encourage investment in poor countries is the best way to solve the wealth gap and associated problems in the long-run, and that may mean accepting US companies outsourcing or moving to poorer countries during the transition period, and allowing more immigrants from those countries to come here and work. But by whatever means, economic development in poorer countries is the key to resolving many of the difficult problems we face and the only way to achieve a lasting solution.

Rich Countries, Corruption and Aid to the World’s Poor

http://statastic.com [ statastic.com] In an unrelated but equally interesting measure, Transparency International has for several years been publishing the Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) in order to draw attention to the role of corruption in stifling economic development. When we look at corruption in rich countries, there appears to be a parallel between increased corruption and decreased effectiveness at helping poor countries.

Josh Brown: Wrestling With War: An Addendum

[Emerging Church Blogs] I made a couple of thoughts about how I think playing a more role up front, instead of just putting out fires, would go a long way in preventing some conflict.

A Little Bit of Good Macroeconomic News on International Trade

[Brad DeLong's Semi-Daily Journal] However, if the Federal government continues to refuse to intervene (as Free Trade theory insists is the only right course), not only must our economy decline but our exchange rate must also decline - and both drastically, to cut the trade deficit in half (50% decline rather than 0.3% decline).

http://yaleglobal.yale.edu [YaleGlobal Online Magazine] Last week Rodrigo de Rato, the managing director of the International Monetary Fund, warned countries against switching their efforts to bilateral deals: "Multilateral trade reform remains the best way forward, and there are potential costs from bilateral agreements in trade diversion, confusion, and demands on limited institutional capacity."

Trade Deficit? What Trade Deficit?

http://econlog.econlib.org [EconLog: Library of Economics and Liberty] So Bryan, in the spirit of your public finance lecture I must ask how much you have tied up in currency markets betting on the dollar increasing? I can't imagine how awkward THAT conversation must have been, given how things went when you moved into mostly international assets.
